Well-Being Models

Although TigerWell does not follow one particular model, we are providing examples of existing models, as they represent some of the key ways that researchers and practitioners operationalize and measure well-being.

The Six Dimensions of Wellness

Developed by Dr. Bill Hettler, co-founder of the National Wellness Institute (NWI), this model describes six categories of wellness: emotional, occupational, physical, social, intellectual, and spiritual. The NWI considers wellness to be an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence. They suggest that addressing all six dimensions builds a holistic sense of wellness and fulfillment.

PERMA Model

Martin Seligman, one of the founders of positive psychology, developed a model with five core elements of psychological well-being and happiness. Seligman believes that these five elements can help people work towards a life of fulfillment, happiness, and meaning.

Seligman’s PERMA Model:

P – Positive Emotion
E – Engagement
R – Relationships
M – Meaning
A – Accomplishments
